New DEADPOOL Variant Edition Series Begins - Codeword Ends Friday
Howdy!
Today (September 30th) marks the 41st anniversary of the opening of the very first
Mile High Comics retail location. My extremely humble first comic book shop was
located at 1428 Pearl St., in the former coal storage room of an old bank building
in downtown Boulder, Colorado. I opened that dusty little store with only $800
(and 20 boxes of really nice older comics...) as my entire initial working capital.
When my little store took in a whopping $100 on that first day, I was ecstatic!
To give a sense of perspective, the cover price on all new comics in September of
1974 was only 20 cents, as we were still in the tail end of the Silver Age era, and
the Bronze Age had yet to begin. Gas could still be found for 53 cents a gallon.
I lived for four months (May-September) of that year in a 1963 Chevy Impala 4-door
sedan, sleeping diagonally across comic boxes stacked across the back seat, while
traveling to 11 comics conventions in cities all around the country. The $800 that
I managed to earn at my final show (the 1974 San Diego Comic-Con) was the money
I used to open the Pearl St. store.
Much in the world has changed since that fateful day in the fall of 1974, but one thing
that remains completely undiminished is my love for the world of comics. At the beginning
of that summer I gave up a full ride ROTC scholarship to become a traveling comic book
dealer, which is a decision that I have never once regretted. All I can say to the many
doubters who called me crazy at the time to pursue such an eclectic career is that my
subsequent 41 years of comics retailing have been a blur of remarkable experiences, and
absolutely wonderful people. How can one possibly regret a life when it was filled with
friendships and personal interactions with hundreds of comics legends, such as Jim
Shooter, Will Eisner, Jack Kirby, and Julie Schwartz? I believe that I have been blessed
beyond all measure by Providence, and remain eternally grateful that my personal path
of circumstance led me this wonderful life in the world of comics.
STAR WARS (2015) #10 MILE HIGH
Moving on to current news, we just received confirmation from Diamond Distributing that our
exclusive Mile High Comics
STAR WARS (2015) #10 and
SECRET WARS (2015) #6 variant editions
will be releasing next Wednesday. What that means for you is that you only have five days
left in which to place an advance order for these exclusives with Greg or Mario in our new
comics subscription department at only $19.95 each. As of Monday, these exclusives will
be available only through our back issue department at $24.95. You can contact Greg or
Mario by phone (weekdays 9-5) at 303-455-2659, or by e-mail via nice@milehighcomics.com.
SECRET WARS (2015) #6 MILE HIGH
As an aside, publishing our Marvel exclusives has been the single most successful endeavor
for us during all of 2015. We had a very successful show in
Salt Lake City
last weekend, at
least in part because we sold $4,000 in
STAR WARS (2015) variant editions in just 3 days!
Some of that revenue came from later printings variants, but the vast majority derived from
fans purchasing our Mile High Comics
STAR WARS and
PRINCESS LEIA exclusives.
In case you are wondering, the reason we sold so many of our variant editions is that more
and more fans are catching on to the fact that we are seeking to continue publishing a Mile
High Comics variant edition to each new edition of the primary monthly
STAR WARS (2015) title,
for as long as Marvel will allow. We are currently contracted through issue
STAR WARS (2015)
#12, and hope to be able to sign a contract soon for issues #13-#18. As far as we know, this
is the first time in history that any comics retailer has published variants an entire comics
series from Marvel. Making that commitment has already cost us more than $100,000.00 in upfront
investments, but that risk has been more than justified by the incredible response we have
been receiving from STAR WARS fans.
As regards
SECRET WARS (2015),
those issues are also selling very well for us, with more people
adding the later issues to their subscriptions almost every week.
SECRET WARS (2015)
will be
ending soon, however, so we already have a replacement title in the works. Effective in December,
we will begin publishing exclusive Mile High Comics variant editions of
DEADPOOL (2015) #1-#6.
With the movie coming us in mid-February, I am of the opinion that this title is going to blow
up in popularity next year, so I have already committed to the first six issues, and plan to
keep publishing variants of
DEADPOOL (2015)
pretty much indefinitely.
DEADPOOL (2015) #1 MILE HIGH
If you want to get in on the ground floor of this new series of exclusive Mile High Comics
DEADPOOL (2015)
variant editions, I urge you to contact Greg or Mario right away. Our
DEADPOOL (2015) #1
issue can be pre-ordered for only $19.95 right now, which I will guarantee you will seem like an
insane bargain by the time next summer rolls around. Below is the inked preliminary artwork for our
cover to DEADPOOL (2015) #1. Our covers will feature postcards of DEADPOOL traveling throughout
the Marvel Universe!
TALES OF SUSPENSE #74
I will close today's newsletter with a couple of quick reminders. First, our annual end-of-September
40% off SAVINGS! codeword sale will end on Friday, at noon. Our online revenues typically pick up
quite a bit during October, so this may be our last steep discount codeword sale until December.
second, we do still have a few copies of
TALES OF SUSPENSE #74
in "Good" condition to give away
for free as a bonus for placing any minimum $40 order with us. I urge you to take advantage of
this unique opportunity to receive a free 1967 Silver Age Iron Man/Captain America issue, while
you still can.
Happy collecting!
Chuck Rozanski,
President - Mile High Comics, Inc.

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that we only allow three copies of each of our variant editions
per subscriber. This policy stems from the fact that we actively seek to protect all of our
purchasers of our exclusives from value declines by tightly controlling the availability of
our
Mile High Comics variant editions
in the secondary market. Simply put, to protect your
market value we never wholesale our
Mile High Comics variant editions,
or ever discount them. What
that means is that when you purchase a
Mile High Comics exclusive variant, it can go nowhere
but up in value. 'Nuff said...
