Chuck's Van, with 30,000 Comics, Gets Towed Away!
Howdy!
Another quick newsletter today, as we need to head into
Baltimore
this morning for the dealer set up at the convention. We actually really need to unload our cargo van this morning, as it is filled almost to the roofline with over 30,000 comics. That's just the beginning of our freight hauling for the day, however, as we have to also drive to southern Maryland this evening to pick up 50,000 more comics. In addition, we have over 60,000 comics being delivered to us at the convention from prior wholesale deals that we made with other comics dealers.
All told, we are now looking at about 450 long boxes of comics (about 155,000 comics) already purchased during this single buying trip!
In case you are wondering, we have purchased all sorts of different comics over the past few days. They range from about 150 1940's DC, Disney, and Western comics, all the way through one large batch of overstock new comics, and everything in between.
We even have found great deals on 1960's and 1970's magazines (such as Savage Sword of Conan, Vampirella, and Mad), and have already accumulated over 2,000 new Marvel and DC trade paperbacks and hardbacks! We have yet to pick up many key issues (except for a nice X-Men #94), but that kind of buying we typically accomplish off of dealer's "wall boards" at the actual convention. Other than those really expensive key issues, however, we just been grabbing everything in sight. Our

listings are already exceptionally nice this week, but this latest buying trip also assures that we're going to be having a continuing great selection of comics for you all through this upcoming fall.

While we have been working like crazy at buying old comics, one big deal in southern New Jersey did fall through, so we had yesterday off. Our head buyer, Will Moulton, is with me on this trip, and he had never seen Washington, D.C., so we spent most of yesterday at tourist sites. We started off in the National Gallery (where we took each other's photos with our favorite van Gogh's), and then we walked the entire length of the Mall down to the beautiful Lincoln Memorial. It then began raining, but we still took time to pay our respects at the Korean and Vietnam memorials.
After that, we headed to the new Museum of the American Indian. In all honesty, I have to tell you that the designers of that piece of junk should simply be fired. They need to gut that monstrosity and start over, as it is the single worst museum that I have ever seen. The majority of the space in the museum is wasted in vain attempts at achieving a hodgepodge of Native American imagery, which in the end makes no sense. As a result, there is practically nothing on display of the one million+ piece collection of Native American artifacts that the Smithsonian holds in trust for the American people, including the legendary Heye collection that was put together by an exceptionally avaricious New York banker during the period of 1880-1920. The first two floors are focused on two monumental gift shops, while the top two floors are dedicated mostly to meeting rooms and a theater. Admission was free, but I still wanted a refund upon leaving, for having had my time wasted so needlessly.

While I am still feeling (very) cranky about the Museum of the American Indian, the Air and Space Museum (which is right next door) has greatly improved since my first visit in 1998. The number of cool aircraft on display (such as the "Spirit of St. Louis" and the Apollo 11 capsule) seems to have been substantially increased, and the visual displays are now quite a bit more descriptive than I remember them being. We were both really impressed with the "Predator" unmanned drone aircraft that they now have hanging on one end of the building, complete with two Hellfire missiles. From all the news accounts I that have read, I thought that these unmanned drones (which are gaining rapidly in use in the war against the Taliban) were just like larger versions of small radio-controlled toys. No way.
They are quite large, bigger in fact, than a glider that I once flew in over Hawaii. They are exceptionally slim and lightweight, however, so I can see why they are hard to shoot down. The one on display is a discontinued earlier version, which makes me very curious as to what improvements they have made in the newer models. Clearly, these drone aircraft have the capacity to complete change the battlefields of the future...
Our biggest surprise of our Washington visit came at the end, however, when we returned to our parking spot, only to discover that our cargo van full of 30,000 comics had been (gasp!) towed away. It seems that the avenue that we parked on allows no parking after 4:30 PM, as the parking lane is converted to a traffic lane for rush hour. We had the misfortune of parking at the far end of the block at 10 AM (when the street was packed with other parked cars and trucks), while the small signing announcing this restriction was on a pole near the middle of the block.
All ended well, however, as the parking folks (who were still there when we arrived...) were quite apologetic about having had to tow us, and even helped us flag down a cab. The tow was free of charge, but it was a $100 ticket (youch!) for having parked in a traffic lane. It could have been much worse, however, as all of our comics and the truck were completely OK, so I'm just chalking this experience up as another lesson learned...
While we've been running around the Baltimore/Washington area having fun and buying comics, the 50+ members of the Mile High Comics inventory and order fulfillment crews have been grading and shipping comics like crazy this week. With all of our
back issue comics and magazines
(except for new comics and Dallas Stephens issues) still at a minimum of 60% off, our sales have been exceptionally high this month. September is usually rather poor month for comics sales, but it would appear that we have a shot at grossing more this month than we did in July, which is typically one of our better months of the year. In all honesty, however, our inventory is quite a bit better now than it was in July, and the current 60%-80% off sale has dropped our prices to unprecedented levels. I simply cannot remember a time when we have had so many great comics to offer you, on sale at such ridiculously low levels.

Well, that's it for today. We're leaving now to unpack at the Baltimore convention center. The convention begins tomorrow (Saturday), and only runs through Sunday. What Baltimore lacks in duration, however, is more than made up for in quality. It is one of my very favorite comic book conventions of the entire year! I genuinely hope that I can meet you there...
