Howdy!

I am on a solitary journey today to Santa Fe, New Mexico. As long time readers of this newsletter are already aware, I have been collecting pottery created by the Pueblo Indians for many years. In the course of my pottery collecting I have made many friends at the Pueblos, with a particular affinity for the people of Santa Clara Pueblo, a Tewa Indian Pueblo of about 3,000 located on the Rio Grande river, just north of Santa Fe.

Avanyu Jar

I drove here last evening because today, August 12th, is Santa Clara's annual Feast Day. This is the one day each year when everyone living off the Pueblo is supposed to return for an entire day of prayer and sacred dances, most of which have their origin 1,000+ years ago, in the days of the Anasazi. As a direct result of my many friendships at the Pueblo, I have been blessed to be invited to watch these ceremonies, and to eat a celebratory meal with some families, for the past 15 years.

Feast Day Dancers

While being invited to participate in Feast Day is an honor, it also fills me with some measure of dread. Simply put, all three of my episodes of West Nile Fever first manifested themselves either while I was at past Feast Day ceremonies, or very shortly thereafter. My first West Nile attack was exactly ten years ago today (2003), and required me to drive the 400 miles back to our home in Boulder while nearly incapacitated by the delirium caused by West Nile Encephalitis. I ended up at the hospital that evening, and was then was essentially bedridden for a month. It took me three years to (mostly) recover. My hearing and eyesight never did come back entirely.

Right after I finally started feeling better, the exact same thing happened to me just a few days after I attended Santa Clara Feast Day in 2007. Because West Nile is such a new disease my doctors refused to believe that my Encephalitis could manifest a second time, and it was only after I finally collapsed in delirium 41 days later that I was hospitalized, and then treated with mega doses of steroids to control the swelling in my brain. That experience helped a great deal last year, when my third episode also began almost immediately upon my return from Santa Clara. My doctors immediately began steroid treatments, which kept my primary symptoms down to about a month. Not good, but a whole lot better than being sick for three years...

San Diego Comic Con Crowd

While some people might attribute my illnesses to my participation in the Feast Day, I actually have another, much more likely theory of causation. Simply put, my heading for Santa Clara each year occurs right after I have gone through the incredible stress and aggravation of our setting up at the San Diego Comic-Con. While my first episode of West Nile was clearly triggered by my having been bit by an infected mosquito, my next two attacks occurred within weeks of our returning from the San Diego show. Based upon my own analysis, I think that the emotional let-down that comes from finally reaching the conclusion of that very stressful event is a much more likely trigger for my illnesses than my merely watching dances, and feasting with my friends for a day.

Whatever the case may be, I will be sure and mention in is newsletter if I start manifesting symptoms of a new West Nile attack next week. Knowing that it might occur has provided me with great incentive to my extra attention to my physical well-being, and as a direct result I can tell you that I feel great right now, and in the best shape of my life. In point of fact, I have already signed us up to exhibit at anther major convention in September, utilizing the the exact same booth that we built for this year's San Diego show. With a permanent traveling exhibit now built, and the experience of what happened at San Diego this year as a guide for what not to do, I think that our convention exhibits are going to go much more smoothly in the future.

Moving on to news from Mile High Comics, our 50% off BARGAINS codeword sale is still in effect for you on all eight million of our back issue comics and magazines. My last item for today is what I think is a cool gift for you. When attending Feast Day, it is traditional to bring gifts for your hosts.
