Howdy!

Picking Comics in the
Carraige House Attic

Today's newsletter is coming to you from central Connecticut, where I have been selecting comics from a huge 1970's-2009 accumulation for the past four days. This particularly deal has been exceptionally hard work, as the old wooden carriage house building in which we have been working is quite cramped for the number of comics that it contains (750,000?), with poor lighting and no heating or air conditioning. The weather has been reasonably pleasant, however, so the only time that we were uncomfortable was yesterday afternoon, when we were working in the very stuffy attic/hayloft. As the accompanying picture shows, working under one bare light bulb makes for slow work.

The good news from our trip is that we have been able to find enough quality comics in this old building to more than cost-justify the trip. Our original plan had been to only pick books here for two days, and then attend a couple of small shows in the Boston and Manchester, NH areas. We decided to just stay here, however, because we were locating back issues that we needed to fill holes in our online inventory at a very reasonable clip. In the end, we found over 28,000 Silver Age, Bronze Age, and Modern comics here that we needed, along with about 500 scarce magazines. All-in-all, this has been a very successful buying trip!

As an aside, in case you're wondering, the young lady poring over one of our inventory books in today's photo is Ashley Imbese, who is now helping me during my trips to the East Coast. Ashley lives on Long Island, and has a degree in massage therapy. Since she works entirely freelance in her main occupation, however, she is sometimes free to help me. She is still in training right now on how to tell all of the frequently confusing comics titles apart quickly, but she is the fastest study that I have ever met as regards learning the comics business. Ashley personally picked about 8,000 of the comics that we purchased this weekend, so she is definitely catching on as to how to use our inventory books. If I am lucky enough to have her keep helping me, I think that I will be able to darn near double my success on future buying trips...

Speaking of success in buying comics, Pam's inventory team has been grading and entering an unbelievable number of great back issues into our online inventory over the past week. While their production dropped to "only" 23,500 comics for last five days, the only reason that they didn't meet their normal 25,000 copies weekly goal was because they were dealing with grading so many pre-1982 comics. Older Bronze Age and Silver Age comics simply take more time to grade, as we take extra care to scan for hidden defects, especially on interior pages. That having been said, I was delighted to see how many great comics that we added into our New-In-Stock and Premium New-In-Stock listings during the past week. You can pick any major comics title, and we almost certainly increased our offerings for you in that area over the past five days. Check out any of the links in the popular titles array that I'm having Lynne include for you at the end of today's newsletter, and I think you will be very pleasantly surprised!

My only other bit of news for today is that our current 35% off DETROIT codeword will be ending on this upcoming Friday, at noon (please keep in mind the codeword does not apply to new comics, Dallas Stephens comics, trade paperbacks, hard covers, graphic novels, statues, or supplies). Need I say anything more?

Happy Collecting!
