Steep Discount Books Sale Ends Wednesday! Howdy! Chuck and Nanette (click on image for larger view) It's a gray and cloudy morning here at our farm in Boulder, Colorado. While that might seem on the surface to be a bit gloomy, it is actually a great omen for us. Spring rains are always welcome here, as the high prairie plateau environment in which we try to grow our organic vegetable crops averages less than 15 inches of moisture a year, including all of our winter snows. That's why our irrigation water supplies derived from our mountain snow pack is so critical to our farming success, as are our storage ponds. Without them, we would be completely out of moisture by the end of the summer. That having been said, nothing beats a good spring rain for replenishing the vitality of our soil. The good news is that it is supposed to rain here for the next three days, so we're keeping our fingers crossed. While things are going well here at the farm, they are going even better at Mile High Comics. This past weekend was our strongest weekend for sales for all of 2010! I receive electronic copies of all of our orders on my new iPad, so I spent some time yesterday surveying to get a general sense of what has been selling. It surprised me a bit to see that our weekend surge in sales was not just because I began a steep discount sale on all of our trade paperbacks and hardbacks last Friday. While books did sell quite well for us, we are also selling the dickens out of scarce back issue comics right now. That trend makes me really happy, as it makes me feel as though all of the hard work that I have been contributing is making a real difference. To explain a bit more about why I am so pleased this morning, as those of you who read this newsletter on a regular basis are already aware, I have been spending most of this year on the road, buying comics all over the country. What you may not be aware of, however, is just what a difference my travels have made in the overall selection of inventory on our website. Simply put, I made it our #1 company goal back in January for us to sort, grade, and add into our online inventory a minimum of 25,000 back issue comics per week. With the help of nearly everyone working in our main warehouse, Pam's inventory team has met, or exceeded, that 25,0000 comics goal for 16 straight weeks. As a direct result, we have added a stunning 400,000 (!) choice back issues into our online inventory in just over 100 days. That is precisely the reason why our New-In-Stock and Premium New-In-Stock listings have been so wonderful for the past four months. I do want to stress, however, that adding 400,000 back issue comics and magazines into our inventory means nothing if they are not the issues that we actually need. Simply adding redundant issues for the sake of boosting numbers is a complete waste of time. That's why my traveling nearly every weekend, and making seemingly endless wholesale purchases based upon our inventory records, is critical to our prosperity. Despite the continuing success of Pam's online buying program, well over 75% of the comics that Pam's team has added into our inventory this year originated directly from my buying trips. Nearly all of those comics that I contributed were selected by me specifically because our inventory records indicated that we needed those issues. Although our current success is really is a fairly predictable result, knowing that the hundreds upon hundreds of hours that I have spent picking comics from other dealer's long boxes is (finally) starting to really kick up our sales makes me very, very happy. I want to personally thank all of you who have taken the time to shop with us recently, as the sum of your contributions has helped a great deal to validate all of my hard work. With sales rising so strongly over the weekend, I felt inspired yesterday to start booking even more buying trips. I'll be leaving for Detroit on Wednesday, to attend Motor City Con this upcoming Friday-Sunday. I will return home late on Sunday evening, and then immediately head out again at the crack of dawn on Tuesday, for New Jersey. I'll be at the little Woburn, Massachusetts motel show that Saturday, and will then be attending another small show in New Hampshire, on Sunday. I'll return home to spend the Memorial Day weekend with my family, and then head right back out again to attend my favorite show of the year, Shelton Drumm's wonderful HeroesCon, in Charlotte, North Carolina, June 4th - 6th. The weekend following is the Philadelphia WizardWorld Convention, so it now looks like I will only spend about 5 days at home, out of the next 40. While sometimes a bit lonely, I do have to admit that I really don't mind all of this traveling, as I am becoming quite accustomed to living out of my little suitcase. The fact that I get to meet so many of you in person at shows, and am also able to pick through tens of thousands of comics seeking lost treasures, actually keeps me quite happy. In case you missed it, the way my new Bonus Book program works is pretty simple. Place your order with us as you usually would, and then ask in the "notes" section of our order form for your free item(s). If your order totals $50 (just as an example...) you would not only receive free shipping for orders being delivered in the USA, but would also be able to select either two Bonus Books from the $20 list, or one Bonus Book from the $50 list. A $125 order (which is the level at which our International buyers earn free shipping) would earn the right to select up to six items from the $20 list, or a combination of several items from the $20 and $50 list. A couple of quick terms for the giveaway program. First, we have limited supplies on a few of these items, so some will undoubtedly run out over the next couple of weeks. We do have enough for orders received this week, however, so if you order quickly all of the above giveaways should be in stock.
