ATOM (DC) (JUSTICE LEAGUE) (1962) #14 - Plot Synopsis

Description

Atom #14
Featuring the "Revolt of the Atom's Uniform" as told by Silver Age giants Gardner Fox (writer), Gil Kane (artist) and Sid Greene (inker). Ray (the Atom) Palmer is normally a man in control of the white dwarf star matter that makes up his uniform and gives him his startling powers. However, today his uniform turns against him sending him on a quest for more white dwarf matter. Along the way he still manages to stop a robbery at a museum with some well-placed fists and feet to some crooks' jaws. But soon he's forced to become a thief himself at the home of a famous boxer; again in search of white dwarf matter. Even the celebrated pugilist can't stand in the Atom's way.

Soon, the source of this weird control reveals itself: an intelligent chunk of white dwarf star that seeks more of itself in order to gain mobility and eventually power enough to menace mankind. When the Atom's uniform removes itself from Ray's body, the tiny scientist finds himself stuck at six inches tall. From this low vantage point he must make his way back to his lab and avoid being seen by townspeople or eaten by the neighborhood cat. When Ray returns to the menace with a plan to stop the white dwarf star, it sends his own uniform out to stop him. In the end, Ray proves it is the man that makes the hero, not the colors he wears.
