PHANTOM STRANGER (1969) (#1-42) #30 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Phantom Stranger (1969) #30
For parents in the late '60s and early '70s nothing was more frightening than the prospect that their children might end up in a devil-worshiping cult led by some charismatic madman such as Charles Manson, whose murderous spree in southern California was a not-too-distant memory. So when interest in Eastern religion and non-Christian faith systems bloomed as a result of the Hippie movement, stories of demon-driven Pied Pipers became popular urban myth. Thus, the storyline of "The Children's Crusade!" written by Arnold Drake with art by Gerry Talaoc centers on the strange cult of Baal, an anti-establishment movement led by the fiery Ara Ben-Baal.

While on the surface the Baal cult's message is one of freedom of religion, self-empowerment and the power of joy, its underlying current is one of exploitation and danger. The city council decides they must do something about Ben-Baal and the Phantom Stranger volunteers his services. The mysterious hero quickly uncovers the demonic driving force behind Baal's appeal! Also, don't miss the strange struggle between the Spawn of Frankenstein and a cult of snake worshippers in "Turnabout!" (written by Steve Skeates with art by Bernard Baily).
