An Elseworlds saga written by Dan Jolley and Tony Harris with art by Harris and Ray Snyder. In 1948, having helped the Allies defeat Nazi Germany soundlyy, America had a new enemy-the spread of international communism. The Bat (Batman) and the Clock (Hourman) had worked together before as agents of U.S. military intelligence and now were called on again to stop the systematic assassination of fellow agents. The culprits: two rogue Soviet spies, the Parasite and Steelwolf who appear to be searching for something called the Trigger. Assigned to lead the Bat and the Clock is America's secret weapon, Clark Kent, the Superman. But before the Bat can rejoin the cause, he has to put a stop to Two-Face. And he must struggle with the mistakes of the past that led to the death of Mr. Terrific's wife at the hands of the murderous Scarecrow.

Soon, however, the hunt is on. As the Bat and the Clock try to piece together who the Parasite and Steelwolf are working for as well stop them, Superman's approach is much more direct and violent. The Trigger, they discover, is a means by which to simultaneously blow up all of the research-grade plutonium in labs across the globe. The dawn of the Nuclear Age could come with a big bang! But when Steelwolf is found double-crossed and dead and a courtyard battle with the Parasite ends with Superman crushing him under a steeple - all leads that would have pointed to their leader seem dead. As the costumed heroes regroup, Superman spends an intimate evening with Shiera Saunders (Hawkgirl) and reveals his true identity just before taking her life. He's not Kal-El; he is none other than the Kryptonian criminal Zod, and he's behind the assassinations!
