Plot Synopsis: JSA (1999) #73
Cover by Alex Ross. "Black Vengeance Part 1" is written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Don Kramer and Keith Champagne. Guest-starring Captain Marvel, the Spectre and the Crimson Avenger. "Day of Vengeance" tie in. The Atom-Smasher is a hero in the tradition of his uncle Al "The Atom" Pratt. With his ability to grow in size and strength, he's been a force for justice and a force for vengeance. After starting his super-hero career with Infinity Inc. as Nuklon, Atom-Smasher "graduated" to the JSA after the death of his mentor during the Zero Hour. But when Extant threatened his mother, Atom-Smasher started down a pathway toward a darker destiny. Joining the forces of Black Adam in the takeover of Kahndaq was the final step toward Atom-Smasher's corruption of the soul. But his recent actions have proven that Atom-Smasher is still a hero at heart.

Now the Justice Society of America has a decision to make: do they accept Atom-Smasher back into their ranks or do they shun him as a renegade? Meanwhile, Black Adam is approached by Lex Luthor with an admonition: join the ranks of Villains United or stand alone in the coming conflict. Black Adam has a different idea and turns to Atom-Smasher to once again recruit the troubled young hero to his twisted cause. Also, in Midway City, the Spectre and the new Eclipso take the Crimson Avenger to task for usurping the role of the agent of vengeance. But will her guns be silenced before shedding more blood?
