FREEDOM FIGHTERS (1976) (#1-15) (DC) #8 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Freedom Fighters #8
"D-Day at Niagara!" is written by Bob Rozakis and drawn by Dick Ayers and Jack Abel. Cover by Rich Buckler. In the Silver and Bronze Ages of Comics, DC and Marvel had a fun tradition of mocking characters from the competition by placing facsimiles of those heroes in conflict with their own characters (see the Squadron Supreme, Marvel's version of the Justice League of America as an example). Here, the Freedom Fighters face off against the Crusaders, a legendary fighting team from World War II that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Invaders. (Turnabout is fair play: the Invaders faced a Freedom Fighters-like group called, oddly enough, the Crusaders in issue #14 of that series).

An accidental disruption of the New York state power grid on the part of the Ray is all the excuse NYC District Attorney David Pearson needs to send the Crusaders out after our misunderstood heroes. The Crusaders are Americommando (who slings a shield like Captain America), his teen crime-fighting partner Rusty (Bucky), Barricuda (an amphibian powerhouse like the Sub-Mariner) and Fireball and Sparky (pyrotechnic heroes like the Human Torch and Toro). At Niagara Falls, the two teams clash with no holds barred. Which legendary group of heroes from WWII will come out on top? Watch out, the game stacked in favor of the Silver Ghost, the Freedom Fighters' elusive arch-nemesis!
