DEFENDERS (1972) (#1-152) (MARVEL) #40 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Defenders (1972) #40
"Love, Anarchy and Oh Yes...the Assassin!" is written by Steve Gerber and drawn by Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson. Matt (Daredevil) Murdock has successfully defended the Valkyrie from charges related to the destruction of a restaurant that occurred while she was battling a monster. With Dragonfang, her sword, back in her hand, Val feels like she's finally home. In celebration of her homecoming, Clea makes the Norse warrior-woman a new outfit. The new look definitely appeals to Jack Norriss, estranged husband of Barbara Norris, the woman whose body Valkyrie inhabits. But Val has none of Barbara's memories or emotions and doesn't reciprocate Jack's amorous attention. Meanwhile, Dr. Strange is attempting to come to terms with the lack of concentration he's been suffering from as of late and finding few answers.

The Hulk is across the country in the Southwest clashing with both purveyors and protestors of a snuff film called "Waste." But even after the marquee comes down, one of the protestors experiences the subject matter of "Waste" in a very frighteningly real sense. In a ladies' room across the street, safe from the Hulk's rampage, an Elf with a gun takes her life without rhyme or reason. Back at Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, a note tied to a brick flies through the window and sends the Red Guardian out into the streets to confront the hatred expressed in the message. The Committee for Free Emigration has taken strong exception to the Defenders harboring the Red Guardian, a Soviet citizen. The Committee's leader, a steel-fisted hooded terrorist named the Assassin, has got it in for the Red Guardian because of her country's emigration policies. But the heroine isn't about to let him punish her from the actions of the Kremlin!
