DEFENDERS (1972) (#1-152) (MARVEL) #30 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Defenders (1972) #30
"Gold Diggers of Fear!" is written by Bill Mantlo. Sam Grainger, best known for being an inker, takes over the penciling chores for this 1-issue story inked by Jack Abel. In 1975, Broadway revived the Depression Era musical "Gold Diggers of 1933," at the height of renewed interest in the era of Prohibition (marked by the movies Bonnie and Clyde and The Sting). For a time, it was as popular as "Cats," "The Phantom of the Opera" and "The Producers" would be in later decades. Here, writer Mantlo seizes on that popularity for a tidy little tale of extortion and kidnaping that draws in Earth's mightiest non-team!

When Doctor Strange is accosted on the streets of New York by Maggia thugs, they deliver a ransom note demanding millions in exchange for the safe return of Kyle (Nighthawk) Richmond. The millionaire adventurer is held an old theater in Los Angeles by a dancing hitman named Tapping Tommy. The Defenders come to Kyle's rescue. But with his flashy style, plenty of stage tricks and a small army of killer robots, the kidnapper manages to get the upper hand on Dr. Strange, Valkyrie and even the Hulk. But his triumph is short-lived as the Defenders snap back and bring the curtain down on this one-man show.
