Half Price Sale -Ten Million Comics and Books Howdy! I want to begin today by thanking everyone who sent me heartfelt letters of support about the reservations that I expressed in Monday's newsletter about the disturbing trend of just a few huge companies dominating the vast majority of online commerce. It makes me happy to know that I am not alone in viewing the rapidly-growing online market dominance by Amazon, Wal-Mart, and a handful of other companies as a clear and present danger to the overall health and diversity of e-commerce. At the same time as I received many letters of support, I also received several suggestions and constructive criticism about things that we could do internally to improve. I always take such suggestions seriously, and they definitely spark lively discussions among our management team. Simply put, is our constant goal to seek to help you in any way that we can, and that includes making positive changes to our internal operating procedures. All of the above having been said, I do need to draw the distinction between the capabilities of a small family-owned company, such as Mile High Comics, and a giant company like Amazon. In our case we have only 25-30 dedicated staff members (some are part time...) operating three retail stores, an online back issue service, and a new comics subscriptions division. We all hustle like crazy in any given day to not only keep up with our day-to-day sales and shipping responsibilities, but also to make constant net gains in our overall selection of comics, books, and magazines. In between, we work on updating our data and prices on the website, adding more cover scans, hosting charity events, and steadily improving our stores. Taking into account those considerations, is it any wonder that even after 48 years in the comics business, that I still need to work seven days a week? Ocean of comics In addition to time constraints, we also are limited by working capital limitations. Ever since the day that I borrowed $140 of my mom's precious savings in 1969 to buy my first major comics collection, I have been in debt. When you start out with absolutely nothing, and then gradually expand your start-up business up into substantial size, including reasonable amounts of debt as a part of your capital structure is simply unavoidable. Old 56th building Blessedly, after selling our 56th Ave. building last year, we finally have the means to begin paying off all of our short term debt. When complete, this debt elimination will be a huge blessing, as it will finally allow us to redirect our cash flows away from debt service into more positive arenas, such as the website improvements that so many of you would like to see us implement. In all honesty, it has not been that we haven't been acutely aware of our internal shortcomings, but rather that we just have not had the means to do anything to resolve the issues. If we are blessed with just a little good fortune, however, nearly all of our remaining short term debt could all be paid off in the next 60-90 days. Many fingers are crossed... While we are cautiously optimistic that exceptionally good things are about to occur for us here at Mile High Comics, I do need to let you know that we do still very much need your support during this holiday season. While Nirvana is theoretically just around the corner, we are still living in the here-and-now realities that face all small business on a constant basis. That means that we are relying on strong support for our annual end-of-the-year 50% off HOLIDAY! codeword sale to help assure that our c ritical Christmas season is a success. So you know, initial response to HOLIDAY! has been excellent, with thousands of half price comics being ordered, as well as hundreds more of the trade paperbacks, graphic novels, and hardback books that are currently discounted on our website at 40%-50% off. If we can just keep going at our present pace, our results for this month will be great! With that goal in mind, I ask you to please consider adding a few comics and/or books from us into your shopping budget for this week.
