Free San Diego Comic-Con
HARLEY QUINN Special Edition

Howdy!

I am more than a bit anxious today, as I am in the final stages of placing a $50,000.00 wager. To explain, we have just finished compiling an exceptional inventory of 100,000 choice back issue comics to take to this year's San Diego Comic-Con. It is upon that inventory that we will have to completely rely, as once the convention begins, there are a total of only 41 hours during which the dealer's room is open for business. Because the expenses of exhibiting at San Diego are insanely high (our booth rent, for example, is a staggering $14,000...), we have to gross a minimum of $1,200 per hour (!) at the San Diego, just to reach break even. Utter madness.

If you are wondering why I put myself through such incredible financial stress each summer, you are not alone. Having to gross the ridiculously high sum of $50,000.00 just to keep from losing money, is insane. The only thing that really keeps me going is the challenge of finding ways to successfully innovate and adapt to rapidly changing patterns and consumer demand. I do know that we (barely) managed to hit break even last year with a booth that was not at all complete. Our booth will be vastly better stocked with great comics this year, and we have about 30% more total issues. In theory, those major improvements should help us to actually turn a small profit this year. While probably still not any sort of large sum, at least those earnings would provide some small compensation for our months of effort and preparation for the convention.

While my own personal take on the San Diego convention involves a great deal of stress and fear, most folks who attend the show have a really great time. On the Thursday of the show, for example, I read that there are 216 panels and other programming events scheduled for just that single day. There's no way that anyone who has an interest in comics or pop culture could attend this show and not find something to do darn near every single hour. All other considerations aside, it is still the world's greatest comics convention!
