Video Tour of Mile High Comics

Howdy!

For those of you who have been wondering why I have not been sending as many newsletters lately, the answer is that I have been totally overwhelmed. The primary issue that I have been having to deal with is the huge party for the 2014 Denver Comic-Con that we are hosting this Thursday evening at our Jason St. Mega-Store. This year's party is vastly bigger, and much more complex, than our past parties. As a result, I am finding that the degree of difficulty of our logistics planning has increased exponentially. I am pretty good at organizing these kinds of major events, but this year I am definitely stretching my capabilities to the limit.

To explain a little bit more, our 2012 and 2013 opening night parties were quite successful, with 1,200-1,500 fans attending each event. This year's party is a much bigger deal, however, because A) we are getting enthusiastic support from the organizers of the convention (which had 61,000 attendees last year), and B) the Denver convention itself is now begins on Friday morning (as opposed to Saturday morning the last two years), which makes a Thursday night opening party far more viable and directly connected to the show. In large part, that is why we already have 26 (!) creators from the convention committed to sign autographs for attendees of our party, and why we are having to plan for a minimum of 3,000 fans to attend our party.

View of Stage

Aside from just offering fans a chance to meet creators before the show, we are also organizing three different kinds of entertainment. On the north side of the building we are constructing a stage for sword fighting exhibitions by two groups, one in medieval armor, and the second in oriental garb. Along the west wall we will be hosting a huge costume contest, with $2,000 in store credit as prizes for the top 24 costumes. Last, but definitely not least, I am personally organizing a huge family-friendly Cosplay performance show on the south end of the building (with accompanying bake sale) which is entirely a benefit for the Denver Children's Advocacy Center. Suffice it to say, just the effort of building three major performance stages in the middle of our store is very hard work...

While all of these preparations on my part may seem as though they have minimal application for those of you who live far from Denver, the reality is that our Jason St. store has become a major engine of growth for our company. It took us three years to get enough people visiting this huge store (in a warehouse district...) to make it economically viable, but now that the traffic has finally been built, we are starting to really take off again. What this means for you is that I am going to finally have the working capital available to us be able to hire more staff to help us with sorting and grading comics collections to offer you. That also means that I will have the funds available to go out on the road this fall and winter and purchase even more great collections. And, finally, I should also be able to keep our current 50% off SWEETHEART codeword pricing in effect for you at least through the end of July. All-in-all, getting Jason St. Up and going is a really good outcome for everyone who relies upon Mile High Comics for help with their collections.

X-Men Annual #14

I will close today's newsletter by mentioning that we do still have about 40 copies free copies remaining of X-MEN ANNUAL #14, which features the first cameo appearance of Gambit. Place any minimum $50 order with us this week, and you can then request (in the "notes") that a free copy be included with your order. Other retailers are now asking $10-$20 each for this annual...

Happy Collecting!

P.S. Here is a link to the video that I was required to for this year's Eisner awards judging. The committee that decides who will be selected as the Eisner Award winner for this year specifically asked for proof that I promote small press and Independent publishing, so this video is a 6-minute walking tour of Jason St., during which I specifically emphasize our commitment to alternative publishing. This YouTube video is the first of many that we will be creating for you this week. Expect the first of several from the party to begin posting in Friday...
