50% Off comics and Books Sale Begins Howdy! Our weekend adventure in democracy went very well, with several hundred Mile High Comics supporters turning out to support Norrie Reynolds' candidacy for Empress 43 of the Imperial Court of the Rocky Mountain Empire. The final vote counts will not be revealed until our Coronation Ball next Saturday evening, but given that Norrie's competitor's voters did not show up in anywhere their expected numbers, we think that Norrie has a good chance of being our next Empress. Line to vote While supporting Norrie's candidacy was one of my primary goals of Saturday's endeavor, community outreach and education was another. The ICRME was founded 42 years ago as a mutual protection society by Denver's drag queens and cross dressers. In those archaic days, it was against the law for anyone to dress in anything that was perceived as not appropriate for their assigned gender. Under Mayor McNichols during the early 1970's, the police aggressively enforced this clearly unconstitutional ban, going so far as waiting for performers to exit gay bars, and then hauling them straight off to jail for humiliating strip searches, and steep fines. Candidate for Empress 43 Norrie, Empress 40 Lushus, and Empress 42 Gabriella Those terrible days are now behind us, and the ICRME membership has since evolved to include many members of the straight, transgender, and lesbian communities. We all work together to put on shows and other charitable events, the proceeds of which we donate to organizations who help to feed the hungry, shelter homeless youth, assist disabled veterans, bring comfort to those ill with terminal diseases, and to find help for abused children. With our having raised nearly $300,000.00 for these worthy causes during my time in the ICRME, I am proud to be able to donate my personal time to this very worthy organization. There is a ticket app on ICRMEDENVER.org. The Prince and Princess Ball (at $25 a ticket) is on Friday night in the same hotel, beginning at 5:30 PM. I will be "stepping down" from my one-year appointment as Denver's Prince Royale that evening. If you do not live anywhere near Denver, and would like to attend one of other gala events, check online to see if there is an Imperial Court near you. There are 68 active Imperial Courts right now, in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. As a result, there are coronation balls being presented somewhere, almost every weekend.
