Storm Erosion in Orlando
(click on image for larger view)
It is 5:20 AM here in Orlando, and it's raining. Hard. My flight in from Colorado was delayed yesterday by over an hour, as we had to circle while a huge thunderstorm pounded the Orlando airport. The air traffic controllers then took advantage of what appeared to be a small break in the weather to have us land. It was not a good judgement. I fly a lot, and have experienced more than a little bit of turbulence, but yesterday's landing was so bumpy that I had to put my thumb over the little hole in my take-away coffee cup lid to prevent hot coffee from flying everywhere. A group of young cheerleaders from Colorado who were traveling to the national championships (also this weekend at the Orlando Convention Center) took turns squealing in fear as the plane rose and fell, which didn't make any of the rest of us feel any better. When we finally hit the ground (hard...), the older gentleman across the aisle from me who was listening to the pilots communications with air traffic control told the rest of us that the plane ahead of us had reported a strong wind shear. They're supposed to abort all other landings when that happens, but we were already too close to the ground, and it was raining too hard, so they had us land anyway. To paraphrase the world famous test pilot Chuck Yeager, any landing that you walk away from is a good landing...

While taking a hair-raising plane trip is not my idea of a good way to spend one's birthday, I am still delighted to be here in Orlando. I am once again staying with my good friends Mike Kott and Sue Cornwell from Intergalactic Trading Company, the premier Star Trek and Star Wars dealers in America. I've been staying with Mike since I first slept on his apartment couch in 1975, so we've been friends for over 35 years now. I met Sue independent of Mike just one year later, and was delighted when the two of them ultimately became a couple. During the 1990's we used to stay together in my home village of Goldbach (bei Aschaffenburg), Germany whenever we exhibited at the Frankfurt Book Fair, and then sometimes traveled about Europe after the fair. We had some really good times! Now, we get together annually at their home in Orlando, whenever I fly in for MegaCon. If for no other reason, I would come to MegaCon just to see Mike and Sue. Their friendship means that much to me.

After this newsletter is finished we'll have breakfast at a cozy local diner, and then head in to the convention. I have a pretty relaxed day planned, as a dealer that I know from the New York area told me two weeks ago that he was bringing 100 long boxes filled with comics for me to go through on Friday. Since these issues will be completely unsorted, it should take me all day to gradually winnow out the good books that we need, from the bulk comics that we do not. This one dealer tends to bring in excellent recent issues to wholesale to us, however, as he deals only in high grade Golden Age and Silver Age comics. His lower grade older comics, and all recent comics, he bulks out immediately. I have scored some incredible deals from his overstock in the past, so I am really looking forward to a fun day of drinking strong black coffee, and sorting though his comics at the convention.

While I am here in Orlando, our inventory teams in Denver have been working overtime. The huge truck shipment of comics that I purchased in California last week arrived at our warehouse yesterday. The first order of the day was simply trying to find room to store those 23 pallets full of comics. Then the title sorters (who break down pallets simply by publisher and alphabet) began streaming the first 10,000 DC comics into our existing sorting of DC back issues. Those DC comics will be graded early next week, just as soon as the 30,000 Marvel comics back issues that they are currently grading are completed. I spoke with Pam late yesterday afternoon, and she told me that today's inventory upload will contain about 6,000 Marvel issues whose titles begin with A- D, including large numbers of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, ASTONISHING X-MEN, AVENGERS, BLACK PANTHER, CAPTAIN AMERICA, CONAN, and DAREDEVIL, and all the smaller titles in between. They'll be grading from DEFENDERS-IRON MAN today (Friday), so those titles should be uploaded to our trade paperbacks and hardbacks portion of our New-In-Stock listings. Please act quickly, however, as many of these books came from a single library. As a result, we oftentimes received just one copy of each book...

My final item for today is a reminder that you can still combine back issue comics and books into a single order in order to achieve our free shipping minimums of $50 for orders in the USA, and $125 for orders being delivered to International destinations (no express carriers). Please do bear in mind, however, that the net total of your order must reach the free shipping minimums after all discounts have been applied. Our ongoing 30% off 40YEARS codeword has been saving everyone a great deal of money off of the cost of their back issue comics and magazines (please keep in mind the codeword does not apply to new comics, Dallas Stephens comics, trade paperbacks, hard covers, graphic novels, statues, or supplies), but those codeword discounts are so generous that many orders then fail to qualify for free shipping. Please take all codeword discounts into account when calculating as to whether you'll qualify for our free shipping bonus. We really do want to provide you with both great discounts and free shipping, but simple economic dictates that we have to have you meet our qualifying minimum order requirements before we can ship your order for free. Even a single additional book can oftentimes put you over the free shipping minimums, so why not add one item more to your order? With all the great books that Pam's team put online for you yesterday, earning free shipping from Mile High Comics has never been easier!

Happy Collecting!
