Free DEADPOOL Variant to UNCANNY X-MEN #1
Howdy!
I would like to start off today's newsletter with a note of congratulations for you. To explain, if you are reading this newsletter, the odds are quite good that collecting back issue comics is a substantial part of your life. Having made that decision to build a nice comics collection may now turn out to be very good news for you, as we are seeing clear signs that the market for all sorts of backlist comics (even ones published recently) is rapidly gaining in strength. After a period of several years where the financially debilitating effects of the worldwide steep recession have forced many collectors (and dealers..) to sell their comics at steep discounts, prices are now firming up rapidly.
So you know, demand for scarce comics is increasing pretty much across the board on all titles, and through not only our online business, but also in our four retail stores. New issues from
Marvel,
DC,
Dark Horse,
Image,
Boom,
IDW,
Dynamite, and
Zenoscope
are flying off the shelves as fast as we can order them right now, and most other new issues are also completely selling out from the publishers. As regards back issues,
Silver Age and
Bronze Age
titles are in highest demand, with orders coming in every night via
our website
for not only for the expected
Marvel and
DC
titles, but also for older
Archie,
Harvey,
Charlton,
Tower,
Warren,
Dell, and
Gold Key
comics. In all honesty, we have not seen this kind of robust sales growth in all kinds of comics since the go-go days of the late 1980's.
In case you are wondering, a primary reason for this sudden growth in comics sales, is offshore demand. We have always sold a substantial portion of our website comics to collectors in overseas locations, but it is now to the point where our International sales on any given evening sometimes are greater than our sales in the USA. I attribute this offshore growth in comics sales to the vast popularity of the comics movies (especially Batman, Avengers, Iron Man, X-Men, and Spider-Man) around the world, and also to the increasing use of English as a second language. With few viable comics shops selling American comics located overseas, most of these enthusiastic new comics fans are ending up ordering their issues online, with a substantial portion of them now relying on us. In simplest terms, we will ship over well over 200,000 American comics to International collectors, during just the next twelve months.
Coming full circle back to how this will affect you, your collection is now worth considerably more in the secondary market than it was a year ago. When you make comparisons, I think that you will see that any comics that you purchased prior to this year were exceptional bargains, especially compared to what I am projecting will happen to comics prices for next year. That is not to say that this growth in comics demand will be seamless, as the secondary market typically moves in fits and starts toward any given direction. But the underlying premise upon which I am operating these days is that the entire comics business is back in growth mode. And so you know, my opinion in this matter is not alone, as pretty much every single dealer with whom I spoke during my most recent buying trip to the East Coast echoed my observations. Life in the comics world is not great yet, but it sure is heading in a positive direction.
All of the above having been said, I would encourage you to scoop up as many back issue comics bargains as you can right now. Our 40% off WOODCHUCK codeword is still in effect for you, and Will Moulton just called to tell me that the nine huge pallets of comics that I shipped back from Long Island last week just arrived at our main warehouse. Will and Pam are already grading the first couple of boxes filled with
Silver Age
comics, so our
New-In-Stock and
Premium New-In-Stock
listings are going to be wonderful for you for at least the next several weeks.
It is important to note, however, that I am also beginning our first overall review of our website comics prices in three years. Starting at the beginning of the modern Marvel issues, I am finding that many of our listed prices are far too low in light of current demand. So low, in fact, that we have already completely sold out of many issues that used to be relatively common. Thanks to my having bought wholesale comics deals so vigorously during the recession, however, we do (blessedly) have over one million unsorted back issues in reserve. Those one million back issues will now be going on our website with revised prices. That having been said we have over 250,000 different items listed in our database, so it will probably take me until the end of the year to wade through revising just the main titles. In the meantime, I think that it would be very much in your best interest to pick up as many back issues as you can, while we are still offering them with recessionary pricing, and the 40% off WOODCHUCK discount. 'Nuff said...

Uncanny X-Men #1 Deadpool Variant

My final item for today is what I believe is a funny joke that Marvel is pulling on DC. As most of you are already aware, DC has a huge JLA promotion upcoming in which they are offering the new
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 with 53 different covers,
each featuring a different state flag. Well, Marvel is releasing
UNCANNY X-MEN #1
on Wednesday, with a specially designed variant cover edition in which 53 state birds are featured all doing their daily business on DEADPOOL's head! I had not heard about this joke until this morning, and when I first heard about it, I laughed so hard that tears came. I was also delighted to hear that Will ordered a stack of these
DEADPOOL variant covers
to give away to readers of this newsletter. Thanks to Will's foresight, if you place any minimum $50 order with us over the next couple of days, you can ask for a free DEADPOOL variant of UNCANNY X-MEN #1 in the "notes" section of our online order form. Supplies are limited, however, and this is one variant that I think most comics dealers missed, so it could easily be one of those issues that immediately explodes in value. Order quickly...
Happy Collecting!

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that Marvel just gave us special pricing on about 30 of their new trade paperbacks and hardbacks. As a result, we can offer them to you at half of cover price! I do think that Marvel is letting many of these books go out-of-print, however, so if you want to pick any up, right now would definitely be the time...
