Huge Private Book Collection - DELL and GK Comics - MIRACLEMAN
Howdy!
A quick story today, as tomorrow will mark the anniversary of my 46th year of being a
professional comics retailer. If you have never before heard the story, I began selling
comics in 1968 to my close friends and via a thrift store on an American army base in
Frankfurt, Germany. When I moved to Colorado in 1969, I heard tales of an amazing private
collection of 3,500+ comics owned by a boy of my age whose mom had worked at the local
magazine distributor. It took me five months, but I was eventually able to convince my
mom to loan me the $140 it cost to buy those comics.
On a cold and snowy day in January of 1970, we braved roads covered in black ice to pick
up the comics. It was a good thing that we did, as I later heard that another local comics
fan had intended to buy the collection, but could not get a ride, so he showed up a day
too late. Buying that boy's comics was just the first step, however, as I now found myself
in debt for the first time in my young life. Figuring out a way to turn some of those great
comics (they went all the way back to
FANTASTIC FOUR #4
and
DAREDEVIL #1)
into cash became
my mission.
The good news is that mom was a part-time coin dealer, so she had become friends with the
owners of a local monthly antiques market. It was held on the first weekend of each month
in the Colorado Springs City Auditorium. Even though I was only 14 years old at the time,
my mom convinced them to let me lease half a table at the February 6th, 1970 show.
I sold no comics at collector prices that first show, as
people willing to buy older comics for more than cover price were an extremely rare breed
in 1970. I did, however, sell some of the less impressive extras from the collection in bundles
at the bargain rate of 10/$1, so I did earn a bit of my mom's money back. Of more importance was
the fact that I impressed the owners of the antiques market enough that they let me expand to a
full 8' table for the March, 1970 show. That was when Bob Conway, Mile High Comics customer #1,
walked in the door! Bob loved older comics as much as I did, so he was delighted to pick through
my boxes, and grab a few gems. Bob and I have been friends ever since, and it still gladdens my
heart every time he wanders into our
Jason St. Mega-Store.
So what has happened over 46 years? Well, for starters during my career I have been able to
provide about $200,000,000 in comics to over one million fans in Colorado, as well as in locations
throughout America, and all around the world. While providing that many people with enjoyment is
certainly a noteworthy accomplishment, I have to say that being able to raise our four daughters
in the world of comics has given me just as much (if not more) joy. All of the above having been
said, as my 61st birthday now approaches, I feel compelled to reach out to thank everyone who has
every placed an order with us, or who has patronized one of our many
retail locations.
Without
your kindness and support I would never have been able to live a blessed and fulfilled life in
the world of comics. I sincerely thank you for letting me be a part of your life.
Moving on to news from today, we opened up a locked room in our 56th Ave. warehouse on Wednesday
afternoon, and discovered a
long lost collection of out-of-print
trade paperbacks and hardbacks.
These 250+ books were part of a private collection that I purchased several years ago, but that
we set aside to enter into our
website
at a later date because we were overwhelmed at the time.
Well, now that we're consolidating our 56th Ave building's inventory in to our
Jason St. Mega-Store,
it is clearly time for these scarce books to go on the market. You will find a partial listing
of these books at the end of this newsletter, and the entire listing is
here.
The especially good news for you about this
private library
is that we also have a systemwide
book sale in effect for you right now, with all of our
trade paperbacks
available to you right
now at a minimum of 50% off, and all of our
hardback books
on sale for you at a minimum of
40% off. Those discounted book prices are listed for you right on our
website,
so no codeword
is required. Please do note, however, that quite a few of the books from this one
private library
were previously out-of-stock, and that the collection contained only one copy of each book. The
earliest orders that we receive will be rewarded with the best selection...
In other news, our new 40% off SWEETHEART codeword sale on all of our
back issue comics and magazines
remains in effect for you. Only new comics, a few variants, and our CGC's are excluded
from the SWEETHEART codeword.
I will close today's newsletter with a special sale on original 30 year-old
MIRACLEMAN
comics published by
ECLIPSE COMICS.
The following numbers are all stocked in depth, as I
found an entire long box of MIRACLEMAN issues on a pallet in the back of 56th. Those prices
are for this weekend only, however, as MIRACLEMAN back issues tend to do very well for us
on eBay at our regular prices.
MIRACLEMAN #2 Only $4.95 each
MIRACLEMAN #3 Only $4.95 each
MIRACLEMAN #4 Only $4.95 each
MIRACLEMAN #10 Only $49.95 each
MIRACLEMAN #17 Only $39.95 each
MIRACLEMAN #18 Only $39.95 each
Happy collecting!

P.S. If you like old
DELL
and
GOLD KEY
comics, I found over 500 great issues in two long boxes
yesterday. Pam is going to be working on grading them this afternoon, so some of those cool
older comics should appear in tomorrow afternoon's (Saturday's) New-In-Stock listing, with more
showing up on Monday and on Tuesday. All of these older comics will be eligible for the 40%
discount provided by our SWEETHEART codeword. Free shipping is still available on USA orders
for comics over $40, and International comics orders over $100. Enjoy!
