X-MEN (1963) (#1-113, UNCANNY X-MEN #114-544) (MARVEL) #77 - Descriptive Bibliography
|Plot Synopsis: X-Men #77|
Although the X-Men had no new stories told between issues #67 and #94 (pick
up John Byrne's X-Men: The Hidden Years for those tales), the reprint issues
in between, such as this one, offered collectors an opportunity to catch up
on some of the merry mutant mayhem they may have missed the first time
around. Here, the Super-Adaptoid-fresh from a trouncing at the hands of the
Avengers-decides Professor X's students might make a good start to an
ambitious army of adaptoids.
Created by the network of super-scientists known as A.I.M. (Advanced Idea
Mechanics), the Super-Adaptoid took on the powers of the Avengers (Captain
America, Giant Man, the Wasp, Iron Man and Hawkeye) in order to assassinate
Cap. He failed (of course) but with those powers intact, the murderous mech
turns on the X-Men when he's accidently awakened by Iceman. Tragically, he
almost convinces the Mimic (a mutant with the ability to copy other mutant's
powers) to join him.
Artist Jay Gavin inherited the X-Men penciling chores from Jack Kirby and no
better replacement could have been found. Clean, crisp lines mark his style
and each panel conveys the urgency and drama of the moments writer Roy
Thomas plotted for the young mutants. Thomas, who loved the idea of pitting
one team of super-heroes against another, must have been excited to scribe
this story of a being with all of the Avengers' powers facing off against a
mutant with all of the X-Men's powers. If only the Super-Skrull, with all of
the Fantastic Four's powers, could have joined in! This reprint issue is
presented with a beautiful original cover by Iron Man artist George Tuska
and Thor inker Vince Colletta.
