Plot Synopsis: Spectre (1967) #5
"Fugitive From Justice!" is written and drawn by Neal Adams, cover by Adams. Our story begins as a strangely masked individual makes the perilous climb up the mountainside above Daltonganj in northern India. There he seeks out a wizened old hermit who guards an orb radiating magic power. In a single act of violence, the masked man strikes down the old man and seizes the orb. With its power, he scans the globe for an object full of occult energy: an apparent magic bullet that, as soon as he discovers its location, gets absorbed into the body of a drifter. Days later, the drifter, now transformed into a crazed giant, menaces a department store, spreading fear in all he gazes at. The Spectre races to the scene but soon realizes that his ghostly form causes the crowd of innocent bystanders to panic even more as they mistake him for an avatar of Death. While trying to save fleeing shoppers from trampling over themselves, the Spectre has to let the giant escape.

Catching up with the behemoth later, the Spectre throws everything he can at the creature, only to find himself weaker each time he expends energy. While nothing seems to phase the giant, one look from his blazing eyes and the crowd around the Spectre begins to panic at the very sight of the Astral Ace. Manipulating the forces of time and space, the Spectre does what he can to save the citizenry but each heroic feat tires him more. Finally, the Astral Ace realizes he must return to the body of police detective Jim Corrigan to recharge but Corrigan refuses the Spectre. The reason: after causing such widespread fear, the ghostly hero is now a fugitive from justice. Only by tracking down the puppet-master behind the fear-inducing giant can the Spectre begin to clear his name. The man behind the menace is revealed to be the Psycho-Pirate and through his ability to manipulate emotions and the magic orb, he's almost fully drained the Spectre of his unearthly power.
