Plot Synopsis: Power Man #5
Sweet Mama! "Don't Mess with Black Mariah!" is the wise word passed down by author Steve Englehart and illustrated by George Tuska and Billy Graham. Blaxploitation like Shaft, Superfly and Blacula serves as the cultural backdrop for our tale of street crime and justice. In the shadowy balcony sets of the 42nd Street Gem Theater, two thugs beat a man senseless. Enter Luke Cage, Hero for Hire, who will take on an underdog's cause whether he's being paid or not. The victim, Frank Jenks, lies dead, but before Cage can finish telling his widow the bad news, his body disappears. It's the work of street hustler Black Mariah, 400 pounds of mean in a flower-print dress.

When Cage tracks down the murderers to Black Mariah's lair, he finds a warehouse full of bad guys with attitude. Against a small army of crooks, Cage holds his own thanks to his bulletproof skin and enormous strength. Driven on by a thirst for justice, Cage nearly brings down Black Mariah's house, trashing her men. But when the murderous mama takes on Cage herself, he finds he's a whole new world of hurt. The battle ends in the East River with Cage on top, without a doubt. But when he comes back to tell the lovely widow her husband's killers have been caught, she thinks he's looking to be paid. Cage can't catch a break!
