Plot Synopsis: DC: New Frontier (2004) #4
"Mystery in Space" is written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke. Welcome to the paranoid '50s. If it wasn't the Communists trying to destroy our way of life, it was the Martians. The distinction between Bolshevik and extraterrestrial is lost on the U.S. government and its lead spy agency, Argent. Swaggering like John Wayne after its victory in World War II, America is not about to take any new threat lying down. So when the Martian Manhunter is discovered on Earth, the overzealous military types decide the best defense is a good offense. A manned rocket carrying nuclear and biological weapons is readied and aimed at Mars in order to stave off invasion. As J'onn J'onzz tries to sneak aboard before launch in order to hitch a ride home, he's confronted by King Faraday, the U.S. top counter-espionage spy.

Meanwhile, the Flash is also nearly trapped by Argent. Realizing that the country he's trying to protect no longer trusts him, the Scarlet Speedster hangs up his boots very early in his career. And in the deep South, the black vigilante named John Henry falls prey to the small-minded racists he dedicated his life to eradicate. This while the law looks the other way. Meanwhile, the Batman remains on the trail of the true menace; an ancient evil from beyond the stars. Will even the mighty Superman be able to stop the mad machinations of a military-industrial complex seemingly hell-bent on self-destruction when the true enemy has yet to be revealed? Is it Fear itself?
