CREATURES ON THE LOOSE (1971) #16 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Creatures on the Loose (1971) #16
First appearance and origin of Gullivar Jones, Warrior of Mars. Cover and art by Gil Kane. "Warrior of Mars" is adapted by Roy Thomas from Edwin L. Arnold's 1905 novel "Lt. Gullivar Jones: His Vacation." Preceding Edgar Rice Burroughs' more famous "John Carter, Warlord of Mars" by six years, Arnold's work bears many similarities to Burroughs' later work, including its protagonist who is a Southern military gentleman transported to the Red Planet by mystical means, gaining considerable strength, speed and endurance along the way, falling in love with a voluptuous Martian princess and battling bizarre alien monsters.

However, Arnold's Gullivar Jones is less polished and poised than John Carter, commonly stumbling into situations and getting himself in trouble through his hot-headedness rather than engaging in military strategy or court intrigue. Further, writer Thomas has updated Arnold's character to cast him as a disenchanted Vietnam vet. Gullivar is pulled through both time and space to end up on a Mars that is populated by savage peoples struggling to get by without the help of the ancient technology of their ancestors which lies just beyond their reach! Plus, don't miss two Jack Kirby-drawn creepy classics: "The Impossible Tunnel!" and "The Frightened Man!"
